Best videos of 2011: 3D tour of HIV

At number 9 in our countdown, see the most detailed 3D model of HIV.

You can now peer into the core of HIV with this ultra-detailed model of the virus. The animation takes you on a tour of the thousands of lipid molecules encasing HIV as well as key proteins that make up its membrane. Proteins marked in red are from the virus's own genome, while those in grey are taken from its human host. Peeling back the layers reveals the enzymes within and the RNA powering its spread.
The award-winning visualisation was created in three months after consulting HIV experts, X-ray images and using over 100 references.
To find out more about the project, read our original post, HIV as you've never seen it before.
If you enjoyed this video, see how a virus can spread ultra-fast by hopping.
